Episode 6: Doing Nothing With God

Is your time with God just one more thing to get “done”? In today’s episode, I’m sharing my first experience with spiritual practices, and how it helped me move from striving to surrender when it came to my walk with God.

We’ll consider together how we view God, and name what we actually want from our time with Him.

This Week’s Reflection

This week’s practice is simply a time of reflection. As you read these questions, pay attention to your own response, and also listen for what God might want to show you today.

Try to answer as honestly as you can, not giving what you think is the “right” answer that you know in your mind, but the one that resonates in your heart. Bring your honest answers to God, and trust that He will meet you in this time.

  1. How does your experience with God or church in your growing up years impact your view of Him now? Do you see Him as distant or close to you? Loving, or condemning? Harsh, or merciful?

  2. Do you believe God would still love you, or even like you, if you didn’t get your act together?

  3. Listen to the question in Galatians 3:3 again…“After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?”

    1. How would you answer the question in that verse? After initially receiving Jesus by faith and grace, are you now working and striving to prove yourself?

    2. What would it actually look like to continue by the Spirit instead of your flesh?

  4. Think about your quiet time or other spiritual practices you might do. Why do you spend time with God? Does it feel like an obligation or something to get done, or do you experience it as an invitation to be with Jesus?

  5. What do you want to experience in your times with God? Name what you want to God, and ask Him to reveal Himself to you.
